Portable power station and power bank for camping in Malaysia

A camping power station has to be silent and it has to be honest about weight. Petrol generators are banned at most managed sites here and unwelcome at the rest, which is why a battery is the only thing you can actually run past 10pm.

RIVER 3 sizes carry in one hand. DELTA 3 sizes run a small group for a long weekend, and both charge from a folding panel between hikes.

Runtimes are calculated against the first unit recommended below, at 90% inverter efficiency. Real figures move with ambient temperature and how hard the appliance cycles.

One night up. Does it last?

Brinchang drops to 16°C after dark, which is when a heated blanket and a kettle stop being luxuries. Scroll from the drive up to first light, and tap anything on the frame to change it.

Everything in the frame is a control. Tap a unit along the top to swap the battery, tap a charge source on the left to add or drop hours of it, tap a load on the right to switch it off, and tap a number at the bottom to change how many days you are out. Amber is the 800w alternator, pale blue the solar panel, blue the output to your loads. DC loads skip the inverter and cost about 10% less than the same appliance on AC.

Actual consumption will vary with how you use it. Appliance ratings differ between makes and models, a compressor cycles harder in heat, a fridge that is opened often works more, and battery capacity falls in high ambient temperature. Treat every figure here as a worked estimate for planning, not a guarantee of runtime. A model, not a promise. AC loads carry a 10% inverter loss, DC loads none; solar assumes 62% of panel rating over a Malaysian day; the alternator figure assumes the engine is actually running. Heat, a tired fridge seal and a hard-cycling compressor all move it.

Usable energy is 90% of rated capacity. Solar figures assume the panel earns about 62% of its rating over a Malaysian day - clear morning, cloud after two, no shade on the array.

The arithmetic

Size it from the load, not the price.

Lights, phones, a fan and a small speaker is roughly 90W for six evening hours — 540Wh. A 286Wh RIVER covers one night of essentials; 1024Wh covers a long weekend without rationing.

Who buys this

Weekend hikers, families at drive-in camps, and anyone who has slept beside a petrol generator once.

Season and climate

Highland nights drop to 12–16°C, which is where a battery beats a gas lamp. Charge to 100% the morning you drive up.

What to bring, and why

Four things that change the outcome more than the size of the battery does.

01

The lightest unit that runs 240V

Everything you carry up, you carry down. Weight beats capacity above 800m.

02

A soft carry bag

Protects the ports on a scramble and keeps the fan intake clear of grit.

03

String lights, not floodlights

20W across the camp beats 200W in one spot, and neighbours will thank you.

04

Rain cover

None of these units are rated for immersion. A dry bag is cheaper than a claim.

Where people get this wrong

01

Carrying capacity you will not use

Above 800m every kilo is a decision. One night of lights and phones is 540Wh - a 286Wh unit and discipline beats 2kWh you resent on the climb.

02

Expecting a panel to work under canopy

A 160W panel in pine shade returns almost nothing. Charge before you drive up and treat solar as a bonus, not the plan.

03

A 1200W kettle on a 300W unit

The plate figure decides it, not the capacity. Anything with a heating element needs a DELTA size or a gas stove.

Questions People Ask

Can I take it on a domestic flight to Kota Kinabalu?

No. Every model here is far above the 100Wh airline limit for lithium batteries. Drive it, ship it by road, or rent at the destination.

Is it quiet enough for a shared campsite?

Yes. There is no engine. The only sound is a fan under heavy load, and nothing at all when you are just running lights and phones.

How long does it hold charge sitting in storage?

Roughly a year at 60–80% with the app storage setting on. Top it up the week before a trip, not the night before.

Tell us the load. We will size it.

Appliances, hours, and whether it has to survive a whole weekend without sun. That is enough to name one model instead of three.
