Backup power

What will actually keep this running?

Tell us what has to stay on and for how long. Loads are modelled on real Malaysian appliances at 240 V with duty cycles applied, and startup surge is counted separately, which is what decides whether an aircon or a pump will start at all.

How this is worked out

Duty cycle. A fridge is not drawing 150 W for twelve hours — its compressor cycles. A duty factor is applied per appliance. Multiplying straight through overstates a fridge roughly threefold, which is how most sizing answers end up two rungs too big.

Surge. One motor starts at a time, the realistic worst case. Peak demand is the continuous load plus the largest single startup, not every surge at once. For anything with a compressor it is the surge, not the running watts, that decides whether it starts at all.

Losses. Inverter and conversion efficiency 88%. Usable capacity 95% of nameplate, reflecting the reserve the BMS holds back on LFP cells.

Solar. Kuala Lumpur averages 4.5 peak-sun hours a day — the Global Solar Atlas figure, not a vendor one. A ground-propped folding panel yields about 62% of its rating once heat, tilt and soiling are counted.

The monsoon correction. On a heavy-rain day output falls to roughly a quarter of clear sky. Solar is weakest during exactly the storm that takes the grid down, so no daily top-up is assumed during an outage.

Rooftop solar

What solar would do to your bill.

NEM closed on 31 December 2025. Under Solar ATAP an exported unit is worth about 57% of one you use yourself, and surplus past your own monthly bill is forfeited — so sizing works differently now, and bigger is not automatically better.

Tariff and solar assumptions

Tariff. TNB Domestic Tariff A under RP4. Every component below is a theme setting — the Automatic Fuel Adjustment is revised monthly by Suruhanjaya Tenaga and must be updated without a developer.

Generation. 3.61 kWh per kWp per day for Klang Valley — the Global Solar Atlas PVOUT figure, which already includes system losses. A modelled satellite value, not a brochure number.

Self-consumption. Capped by how much load exists in daylight, not a flat percentage. Malaysia makes the empty-house case worse than European benchmarks because bedroom aircon runs 9 pm to 7 am — almost entirely outside the generation window.

Export and forfeiture. Solar ATAP credits domestic exports at the energy charge only. Anything not offset within the same billing period is forfeited, and export credit cannot offset the fuel adjustment.

Already on NEM? Do not switch. Joining ATAP requires terminating an existing NEM contract, and NEM credited exports one-for-one.

Questions? Answers.

Why does it recommend a smaller unit than I expected?
Because it applies a duty cycle. A fridge is rated 150 W but its compressor cycles, so across twelve hours it averages nearer a third of that. Nameplate arithmetic — watts times hours — overstates a fridge roughly threefold, and that is how most people end up two rungs larger than they need.
It says a unit has the power but not the runtime. What does that mean?
Two different limits. Power is watts: whether the inverter can carry the load and start the motors at all. Runtime is watt-hours: how long it lasts. A unit can comfortably run your load and still be flat in two hours, which is when an extra battery is the cheaper answer than a bigger station.
Why is startup surge treated separately?
Anything with a compressor — a fridge, a pump, a non-inverter aircon — draws far more for the first second than it does running. A non-inverter aircon pulls roughly three times its rated load at startup. That spike, not the running watts, decides whether it starts.
Can solar keep it topped up through an outage?
Not reliably, and the tool does not assume it. Kuala Lumpur averages 4.5 peak-sun hours a day, but on a heavy monsoon day a panel makes about a quarter of that. Solar is weakest during exactly the storm that takes the grid down, so the runtime figure stands on battery alone and solar is shown separately.
Where do the solar payback figures come from?
The TNB Domestic Tariff A schedule under RP4, run twice — once on your current consumption and once on the reduced figure — so the efficiency-rebate band jumps are captured rather than averaged away. Generation uses the Global Solar Atlas PVOUT value for the Klang Valley, which already includes system losses.
Why does the recommended solar system stop at 5 kW?
Solar ATAP caps single-phase installations at 5 kW. It is a regulatory limit, not a roof or budget one, so for most Malaysian homes the size is close to decided for you and what actually varies is the payback.
I am already on NEM. Should I switch to ATAP?
No. Joining ATAP requires terminating an existing NEM contract, and NEM credited exports one-for-one where ATAP credits them at the energy charge only. Staying put is almost always worth more.
Can I talk to someone instead?
Yes, and past a certain size we would rather you did. Anything involving a transfer switch, a three-phase supply or a business load deserves a conversation rather than a slider.
